We grew up near a college campus and would go dumpster diving for about 2 weeks at the end of the spring semester. This was when all of the college students cleaned out their rooms. We found computers, books, irons and ironing boards, sound systems, furniture, clothes, and all sorts of other great treasures. At the same time we collected soda cans and bottles and cashed them in at a nearby recycling center. I did get cut on a broken mirror once - so you just have to be careful.
